The brief
The Digital Genix website does more than take enquiries. It has lead forms, a quote builder people can share, free tools that email their results, a newsletter, video and an exit pop-up. The aim was to measure all of it properly before any paid traffic arrives, send the right events to each ad platform, and respect the visitor’s consent choices while doing it.
What I did
Every interaction as a named event. The site pushes each action to the data layer with its own event name: generate_lead, contact_click, form_open, form_start, newsletter_signup, quote_share, tool_use, tool_results_emailed, video_sound_on and exit_popup. Each one becomes a GA4 event, so the journey from first click to enquiry is visible in order, including the people who open a form and never finish it.
Context travels with each event. 27 data layer variables carry the detail: which form and where on the page, which service, the budget and industry where a lead gives them, which tool was used and the score it returned, which package a quote was for, which contact method was clicked, and how much of a video was watched. A lead in GA4 arrives with the information needed to judge it, not just a count.
The right conversions for each ad platform. Google Ads gets two conversions, website lead form and contact click, with the conversion linker on every page. Meta gets standard events (Lead, Contact, CompleteRegistration for the newsletter) plus custom ones for form opens and tool use, and the Lead event carries the form, the service and a lead value in pounds. OpenAI Ads gets its own pixel with lead, contact and newsletter events, so those conversions are recorded there too.
Consent decides what loads. The site’s consent banner pushes its own event. The Meta and OpenAI pixels only load once ad consent is granted, Microsoft Clarity only once analytics consent is granted, and the Meta Lead tag itself also checks for ad storage consent before it fires.
Counted tool use once per use. Meta’s ToolUsed event only fires on the tool’s start action, so the steps inside a tool aren’t each counted as a separate use.
IDs in one place. The GA4 measurement ID, Google Ads conversion ID, Meta Pixel ID, OpenAI Ads pixel ID and the lead value are all constants, so changing an account or a lead value is a one-field edit.
Results
Google rates the container “Excellent” with no issues. The site now reports every enquiry route and tool interaction with its context, sends each ad platform the conversions it can optimise on, and holds the pixels back until consent is given. The tracking went in before the campaigns, so the first one learns from real enquiries rather than page views.
In short
Five platforms, one data layer, and consent handled properly: a website measured in full before a pound goes on ads.
