OpenAI began testing ads in ChatGPT in the US in February 2026, and on 6 June 2026 switched them on in the UK, as reported by PPC Land. Since then OpenAI has started rolling out a self-serve Ads Manager beta to UK businesses, per Search Engine Land. This is what's known, from OpenAI's own page and the reporting around it, and what I'm doing about it.
What OpenAI has said
OpenAI's own announcement, first published in February and updated in March and May, sets the rules:
- Ads are "always clearly labeled as sponsored and visually separated from the organic answer."
- Only logged-in adults on the Free and Go tiers see them. Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Education users don't. Free users can opt out of ads in exchange for fewer daily messages.
- No ads for anyone OpenAI knows or predicts is under 18, and no ads near sensitive topics, which it lists as health, mental health and politics.
- Ads are matched to the conversation's topic, past chats and past ad interactions. Where several advertisers match, the most relevant shows first.
- Advertisers get aggregate performance data only, such as views and clicks. They do not see chats, history, memories or personal details, and OpenAI says ads do not influence the answers.
What advertisers can do
From the reporting: each ad carries the advertiser name, a favicon, a headline, description copy, a landing page URL and an image. OpenAI recommends a headline of around 16 characters and a description of around 32, which is tighter than a Google search ad.
Targeting is by context hints: you describe the kinds of conversations your product fits, rather than bidding on keywords or targeting profiles. The US self-serve Ads Manager offers CPC bidding alongside CPM, daily budgets and geo-targeting. OpenAI launched a Conversions API on 5 May 2026 for measurement; post-click reporting is still being built.
For UK businesses the Ads Manager beta lets you create an account and explore the campaign tools without upfront billing. One practical point for anyone working with an agency or freelancer: OpenAI asks that the business creates its own account and invites partners through Settings, rather than the agency creating accounts on the client's behalf. There's no equivalent of a Google manager account yet.
What I'm doing
Tracking first, as always. On a services website I built the Tag Manager container for this year, the OpenAI Ads pixel is already in the container, firing lead, contact and newsletter events behind consent, alongside GA4, Google Ads and Meta. If ChatGPT ads are going to be tested, the conversions have to be measurable from the first click. The tracking case study shows the set-up.
Hands-on already. I'm actively exploring the platform and running it for a client, so the test below is live rather than planned. A case study will go up once there's a full period of data to show.
A small test, with low expectations. Context-matched ads inside an answer are a new format and nobody has UK conversion data worth quoting yet. OpenAI itself describes the whole thing as a learning phase. So the test is a modest daily budget on a B2B service with a clear question people ask ChatGPT about, judged on cost per lead against Google search on the same service, over a month.
Not for restaurants yet. The audience is Free and Go users asking questions. For a local restaurant launch, Meta and TikTok reach the right people for less and I can measure the result. I'll revisit if local targeting and formats grow.
What I'd tell a client who asks
It's real, it's live in the UK, and it's early. Set up the account yourself, invite whoever runs your ads, make sure the conversion tracking is in place, and run a small test with a clear question to answer. Don't move budget from channels that are producing leads until it has a cost per lead of its own.
I'll update this post as OpenAI publishes more on formats, bidding and reporting for the UK.
Checked against OpenAI's announcement and the reporting above on 4 November 2026.
I run paid ads on Meta, Google and TikTok across the UK, the Gulf and Pakistan, and build the tracking and pages around them. Get in touch or find me on LinkedIn.
