Meta is removing placement exclusions from ad sets. What that changes, and what still works

From August 2026 Meta has been removing the option to switch off individual placements at ad set level for sales, leads and engagement objectives. What was announced, what controls remain, and how I've handled it on restaurant and lead generation accounts.

Meta is removing placement exclusions from ad sets. What that changes, and what still works

For years the first thing I did on a new Meta ad set was open the placements and switch off the ones that never produced anything for the client: Audience Network for a restaurant, in-stream video for a lead form, Facebook search results for almost anyone. That option is going.

What was announced

On 20 August 2026 Social Media Today reported an in-product notice, shared by Meta ads specialist Jon Loomer and covered here by Relevant Audience, telling advertisers that Meta is removing the ability to exclude individual placements, and platforms, at the ad set level. Meta didn't publish a separate announcement, and the notice reached some accounts before others. Common Thread Collective's changelog dates the change to 21 August and notes that full placement exclusions have been removed for the sales, leads and engagement objectives, with reach and awareness campaigns still offering exclusion for now. The same source reported Messenger Stories being removed as a placement altogether on 27 August.

The direction is clear even where the detail isn't: Meta wants every campaign on Advantage+ placements, with its own system deciding where the ads show.

What still works

Placement value rules. In the Placements section of the ad set you can choose "Adjust bids for placements" and reduce the bid on a placement by up to 90 percent. That doesn't switch a placement off, but it tells Meta a result there is worth far less to you, so delivery drops. It's the control I now use where I used to exclude.

Inventory filters and block lists. Brand safety controls over the kind of content ads appear next to, and block lists for specific publishers in Audience Network and in-stream, are separate from placement exclusions and still apply.

Creative built for the placement. If Meta will put a feed ad into Reels and Stories whether you like it or not, the answer is to give it a version that works there. Vertical video with the message in the first second, text kept out of the edges, and a call to action that works without sound.

Reporting by placement. You can still break results down by placement in Ads Manager, so you can see what each one produced and set the value rules from evidence.

What I've done on the accounts I run

For the restaurant accounts, where the job is brand awareness and engagement through the year, little changes: those objectives still let me exclude, and broad placements have always worked well for them. In my experience the cost per engagement on those campaigns has been lowest where Meta had room to choose.

For lead generation it matters more. A lead form in a placement with accidental taps is a lead form full of junk. On those ad sets I've replaced exclusions with bid reductions of 70 to 90 percent on the placements that have historically produced leads nobody could reach, and I check the placement breakdown every Monday. If a placement starts producing qualified leads, the rule comes off.

I've also moved the qualifying question on the lead form up the order. It was always the main quality control; now it's doing the work the exclusions used to.

What I'd check in your account

  1. Open an active ad set and see whether the exclusion options are still there. The rollout wasn't simultaneous.
  2. Run a placement breakdown for the last 90 days on your conversion campaigns. Anything spending with no results gets a bid reduction.
  3. Make sure every ad set has a vertical creative. Meta will serve into Reels and Stories regardless.
  4. If a campaign relies on excluding a placement for a brand reason, use the inventory filter or block list, which still exist.

This is one of the bigger control losses in Ads Manager for a while, and I'll update this post if Meta publishes documentation or changes the rollout.

Checked on 4 November 2026. Meta has not published a help centre article on this change at the time of writing; the sources above are the reports available.
